And what about the New Testament?
What did Jesus think of this?
He clearly had thoughts on it. He was God He knew what was coming. And this is what He had to say about it:
John 14:25-26 “I have
spoken these things while staying with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the
Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and will cause you to
remember everything I said to you.
Jesus is telling the disciples another one is going to come
and He will help them by teaching them and reminding them of everything that
was said to them. He is clearly laying a
frame work that shows that the Holy Spirit is going to guide them and not
themselves.
John 16:13-15 But when he, the
Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. For he will not speak on his own authority, but
will speak whatever he hears, and will tell you what is to come. He will glorify me, because he will receive
from me what is mine and will tell it to you. Everything that the Father has is
mine; that is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what is mine and will
tell it to you.
He is again saying that the Holy Spirit will come and
provide them the knowledge they need. He
makes it very clear that what the Spirit is going to teach them comes from God
Himself, not human beings.
Also note that “inspiration” does not mean the same kind of
inspiration that an author receives when writing a book or a musician a song.
2Tim. 3:16 Every scripture is
inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for
training in righteousness,
“inspired by God” is not the best translation. The Greek behind this is: qeo/pneustoß
(theopneustos) This can more literally be translated as “God
– Breathed.”
