Jesus spoke of the Old Testament as if it were Sufficient
Luke 16:27-31 So the rich man said, ‘Then I beg you, father—send Lazarus to my
father’s house (for I have five brothers) to warn them so that they don’t come
into this place of torment.’ But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the prophets;
they must respond to them.’ Then the
rich man said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them,
they will repent.’ He replied to him,
‘If they do not respond to Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced
even if someone rises from the dead.’”
Jesus is telling of the rich man and Lazarus. And in the story you see that the rich man is
pleading with Father Abraham to send a dead Lazarus to his family’s home to
warn them of what will happen to them if they do not change their ways. Abraham tells him that they have Moses and
the Prophets (i.e. the Old Testament) and that this is enough for them to know
all they need to know. He says that even
if they sent Lazarus they still would not believe. One sees this today in some of our own stupid
beliefs.
SIDE NOTE
Sometimes these kinds
of things seem harsh… but God never said free will come without
consequences. In fact, He says the
opposite: From everyone who has been given much, much will be required, and
from the one who has been entrusted with much, even more will be asked. (Luke
12:48)
