Jesus spoke of the Old Testament as if it were Inerrant
In John 17 Jesus is praying to the Father, he says the
following in verse 17: “Set them apart in the
truth; your word is truth.” He
specifically says “…your word is true.” Not “Some of Your word is true, but I
am not sure which part, but that is not really necessary…”
In another example he is proving the resurrection.
Matt. 22:29-33 Jesus answered them,
“You are deceived, because you don’t know the scriptures or the power of
God. For in the resurrection they
neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. Now as for the resurrection of the dead, have
you not read what was spoken to you by God, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God
of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of
the living!” When the crowds heard this, they were amazed at his teaching.
Here He again bluntly expresses the authority and inerrancy
of the Scriptures, He does not say “I know you do not know the Scriptures, but
then bah… who knows which parts are true so it is OK if you don’t know about
marriage and the resurrection.” Instead
He flat says “You are deceived, because you don’t know the scriptures or the
power of God.” Then He has to explain to
them what the scriptures say on these matters.
The people walked away amazed, not challenging Him and saying “HEY BIG
GUY… PFT. WE DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT PARTS
ARE TRUE!”
Just as Father Abraham told the rich man, that they had the
scriptures and had no excuse, so does Jesus do the same.
